Its extensive coastline touches the waters of China in the bulk and the Gulf of Siam in the south. It is the easternmost country on the Indochina Peninsula. Vietnam has a population of 91 million people which puts it at number 13 of the world's most populous countries and also on the list of so-called economies "Next Eleven". According to official figures, growth is 8.17% in GDP for 2008 which makes Vietnam the second country in the Far East in rapid economic growth and the first in Southeast Asia. While West is best known for defeating the U.S. in the Vietnam War, the truth is that this is a culture and a nation with an ancient ancestral history is now a country with a promising economic potential. Most of its history was ruled by various dynasties of the Chinese Empire and his own. Vietnam gained independence in the early tenth century and complete autonomy a century later. The period of government of the native dynasty ended in the mid nineteenth century when the country was colonized by France. During the Second World War, Japan occupied Vietnam, but respected French authority as the collaborationist Vichy government with its ally, Nazi Germany. It was towards the end of this conflict when the Japanese tried to exterminate the French power on suspicion of support for a possible Allied invasion. In this situation, Ho Chi Minh proclaimed the Democratic Republic of Vietnam.
