Turin (Torino in Italian, Turin in Piedmont) is a city, a major business and cultural center of northern Italy, capital of the Piedmont region, located mainly in the left margin of the Po River and surrounded by the Alps. The metropolitan area of Turin, according to the Organization for Economic Cooperation and Development, has a population of about 2,200,000 people.1 The city is rich in culture and history. It is known for its numerous art museums, restaurants, churches, palaces, opera houses, squares, parks, gardens and libraries, among other attractions. Turin is widely recognized for its baroque architecture, rococo, neo-classical and Art Nouveau. Many of the city's public squares, castles, gardens and elegant palaces (the Palazzo Madama), were built by the architect Filippo Juvarra Sicilian, who designed these buildings in the baroque and classical style of the Palace of Versailles in France 2 Examples of these French-inspired buildings include the Royal Palace of Turin, the Little Palace Stupinigi Hunting and the Basilica of Superga. Turin is often called the "cradle of Italy" for being the birthplace of prominent politicians who contributed to the unification of Italy, as Cavour.3 The city now houses some of the best universities in Italy, as the University of Turin, six centuries old, and the Polytechnic of Turin. There are also prestigious museums in the city and important, as the Egyptian Museum and the Mole Antonelliana Turín4. The various sights and attractions of Turin's become one of the top 250 destinations around the world and the tenth most visited city in Italy for the year 2008.5
