Tennessee is a state of the southern United States. It has a population of 6,214,888 inhabitants making it the seventeenth most populous state and the thirty-sixth in size with 42,169 km ². Tennessee borders Kentucky and northern Virginia and North Carolina to the east, Georgia, Alabama and Mississippi south Missouri and Arkansas to the west. The Appalachian Trail crosses the area east of the state, and the Mississippi River forms the western boundary. The capital of Tennessee and the second largest in the state is Nashville, which has a population of 626.144. Memphis is the largest city with a population of 670.902 inhabitants. Nashville has the largest metropolitan area with 1,521,437 inhabitants of the state. Tennessee has played a key role in the development of rock and roll and blues music. Beale Street in Memphis and considered by many as the cradle of the blues, with musicians such as WC Handy who started his career playing in clubs in the area in early 1909. Memphis was also the birthplace of Sun Records, where musicians like Elvis Presley, Johnny Cash, Carl Perkins, Jerry Lee Lewis, Roy Orbison, Charlie Rich and started their careers and where the rock took shape in the early 1950's. The recording sessions in Bristol, 1927 marked the beginning of country music, and the emergence of Grand Ole Opry in the 30 'helped make downtown Nashville the country music recording industry. The term "Tennessee" was first used in an expedition led by Captain Juan Pardo, a Spanish explorer, when he and his men went through a population of Native Americans called "Tanasqui" in 1567 while traveling inland from the current South Carolina. European settlers later encountered a Cherokee town called "Tanasi" (or "Tanase") in the current county of Monroe. The village was situated by the river of the same name (now known as Little Tennessee River).
