Other user descriptions
Pietermaritzburg is the capital and second largest city in the Province of KwaZulu-Natal in South Africa. It was founded in 1838. Popularly called Maritzburg, and abbreviated PMB stands, is home to the campus of the University of KwaZulu-Natal, also produces aluminum and wood and dairy products. Its population is 228,549 inhabitants (in 1991) and an estimated total population in the "Msunduzi Municipality" of about 600,000 people (25% of Asians and whites). The city was originally founded by Voortrekkers after the defeat of Dingane at the Battle of Blood River, and was the capital of the Boer Natalia Republic of short duration. The British took control of Pietermaritzburg in 1843 and became the seat of administration of the Colony of Natal when he pitched his first lieutenant governor Martin West. Fort Napier, named for the governor of Cape Colony, Sir George Thomas Napier, was built to house a garrison. In 1893 Natal received responsibility for your self being built assembly building along with the municipality. In 1910, when the South African Union was formed, Natal became a province of the Union and Pietermaritzburg remained the capital. There are two versions about the origin of its name. One is that it's named after Piet Retief and Gert Maritz, two famous Voortrekker leaders. The other is that it was named after Piet Retief only, since his name was Pieter Retief Maritz. Retief was killed by Dingane, Shaka's successor, King of the Zulus. Maritz actually died in battle with the Zulus in Bloukranz a few hundred kilometers further north so we never managed to reach the area of Pietermaritzburg.
