Philippines (in Filipino: Pilipinas, in English: Philippines), officially known as the Republic of the Philippines (Filipino: Republika ng Pilipinas, in English: Republic of the Philippines) is a Southeast Asian island country located in the Pacific Ocean. In the north is separated from Taiwan by the Luzon Strait, to the west lies the South China Sea and Vietnam to the southwest, between the country and the island of Borneo, is the Sulu Sea on the south sea Celebes separates it from other islands of Indonesia and east borders the Philippine Sea. Its location in the Pacific ring of fire and its tropical climate make it a place prone to earthquakes and typhoons, but also rich in natural resources and has one of the most biodiverse in the world. Being an archipelago comprising 7107 islands the Philippines is divided into three geographical divisions: Luzon, Visayas and Mindanao. Its capital is Manila. With an estimated population of more than 94 million people, the Philippines is the 12th most populous country in the world, regardless of the 11 million Filipinos living abroad. Various ethnicities and cultures live along its islands. In prehistoric times, the blacks were among the first inhabitants of the archipelago. They were followed by successive waves of Austronesian peoples who brought influences from Malaysia, India and the Islamic world, while trade introduced Chinese cultural influences. In 1521, the arrival of Ferdinand Magellan ushered in an era of under the influence and subsequent Spanish rule. Manila emerged as the economic center of the Spanish Empire in Asia and port from which started the annual Manila Galleon in the direction of New Spain. The work of the missionaries converted to Christianity the dominant religion. Between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, fighting broke out of the Philippine Revolution, during which he forged the short-lived First Philippine Republic, the Spanish-American War and Filipino-American War. As a result, the United States replaced Spain as the dominant power. Except for the period of Japanese occupation, the Americans maintained sovereignty over the islands until the end of the Second World War, when the islands gained independence. The heritage of the United States in the Philippines remains in the English language and a greater affinity with Western culture. Since independence, the country has often tumultuous experience with democracy, with popular movements that evoke the "People power" to overthrow a dictatorship in some cases, but its use has also served to highlight the institutional weaknesses of the Republic Constitutional.
