The old city of Nuremberg is divided by the River Pegnitz, which makes some of its streets, especially older ones, have a channel with bridges and some small hills. The historic downtown area is variable, not flat, with ups and downs. The Pegnitz born north of the town nearly 80 km, and after passing through the center runs to the city of Fürth with the Rednitz. The old city is surrounded by 5 km of stone walls built in medieval times and gives it a special feature. Although over 90 percent of the old city was destroyed during World War II, most of its buildings were rebuilt according to original plans. The area of the city is close to 186.4 km ². Nuremberg is surrounded by attractive forests and fields. To the west the neighboring town of Fürth and Zirndorf and southeast with Stein and Oberasbach.
