Travel to New Caledonia

  • Flag
Clans and coffee with milk, slavery and reefs, Melanesian massacres and daily specials. New Caledonia is a good example of the saying "the bread that feeds one comes from the sweat and blood of others." France remains wedded to this part of the world, and has sent its Marines on several occasions to keep people at bay. The inhabitants of New Caledonia-Caldoches, Kanak-looking feet and rushing toward the future, perhaps without optimism, but with the firm intention of ending the senseless cycle of violence that began in the 1980s. The archipelago offers extensive options to the traveler, from scuba diving in pristine reefs to dining out French cuisine, from hiking through the jungle to go clubbing at Club Med in Hienghene. If you keep the respect for local customs, a very open mind and sense of humor, the trip to New Caledonia will become an unforgettable experience.

Other user descriptions
New Caledonia (Nouvelle-Calédonie in French, Kanaky in Kanak) is an archipelago located in Melanesia Oceania few degrees north of the Tropic of Capricorn. It is situated in the southwest Pacific Ocean, 1,500 km east of Australia, and 2,000 km north of New Zealand. Its territory encompasses approximately 19,100 km ². This French colony has special collective status (sui generis), no overseas collectivity as French Polynesia and Wallis and Futuna. The Noumea Accord gave the community a special status and is expected to call for a referendum between 2014 and 2018, this could be decided or preservation independence within the French Republic. The word "Caledonia" is the Latin name which designated the region that currently accounts for Scotland in the UK. The name "Kanaky" is also used in French, English and local Indian languages. This name is preferred by nationalists Caledonians. The word comes from "Kanaka," a word meaning ocean 'human', used by the inhabitants of the Pacific to refer to themselves. The word was then used by the French to refer to all natives of the islands in the South Pacific Ocean, including the Melanesians of New Caledonia. The word is derived in "Canaque" in French, and became a derogatory term. Between 1960 and 1970, when the native Caledonians created the first nationalist political parties demanding independence, this derogatory word was used as a symbol of political emancipation and pride.
