Montserrat is a British island in the Leeward group of the Lesser Antilles, situated in the Caribbean Sea. To the north lies the island of Redonda and the east of Antigua, both belonging to the state of Antigua and Barbuda, and Guadeloupe to the south of the passage between the French island of Guadeloupe. It has an area of 91 square kilometers and a population of 9245 inhabitants (2003). It is a volcanic and mountainous island, with a maximum height of 914 meters above sea level. Most of the beaches along the 40 kilometers of coastline, are of black earth. It has a Neotropical climate, very hot and humid, with average daytime temperatures ranging between 26 and 28 degrees. The island was populated by Arawak and Carib Indians. However, it was not definitely settled until 1632, when it established English and Irish. France tried unsuccessfully to take her on several occasions between 1664 and 1668 and between 1782 and 1784. Today, the island is an overseas territory belonging to the United Kingdom. Much of the island, including the capital (Plymouth), was devastated and two-thirds of the population left following the eruption of the Soufrière volcano on 18 July 1995. The volcanic eruptions have continued since then, so many parts of the island is uninhabitable. Since 2007 the southern half of the island, including the capital, has been declared exclusion zone, and therefore is uninhabited. Hurricanes, especially volcanic eruptions have decisively affected the economy. The tertiary sector, with tourism as the main source of income accounted for up to 81% of the global economy of the island. Currently, although there is an attempt to recover the tourism depends largely aid the United Kingdom.
