Minneapolis (in English: Minneapolis, pronounced [ˌ mɪniæpəlɪs]) is the county seat of Hennepin and the largest city in the state of Minnesota and the forty-seventh most populous city in the United States. The name of the city is attributed to the first city school teacher, who combined the words mini Sioux term that means water, and polis, the Greek word ciudad.1 The people of Minneapolis are known as minneapolitanos. Minneapolis is located in the southwestern part of the state and extends along the Mississippi River, just north of its confluence with the Minnesota River. Bordered by Saint Paul, the state capital. Together they form the center of the metropolitan area of Minneapolis-St. Paul, known as the "Twin Cities", the sixteenth largest urban agglomeration in the country (and the largest in the world sexagésimoquinta) with three and a half million residents. The Metropolitan Council estimated the city population in 2009 at 390,131 inhabitants. The city is rich in water, with about twenty lakes and wetlands, the Mississippi River, streams and waterfalls, many connected by avenues Chain of Lakes and Grand Rounds Scenic Byway, hence its nickname "City of Lakes", a expression that appears on many municipal vehicles and properties. The city was once the world capital of flour milling and activity center of the wood, while today is the primary business center between Chicago and Seattle.2 Named America's most literate city, 3 has cultural organizations that attract people creative and audiences to the theater scene, visual arts, literary and musical city. The diverse population of the community has a long tradition of charitable support through progressive public social programs and collective philanthropy privada.4
