Other user descriptions
Louisville pronounced ['lu ː ǝvǝl] is the largest city in the state of Kentucky. It has a population of over 699,827 inhabitants. It is considered the 16th or 27th largest city in the United States depending on which calculation is used to count the population (see Nomenclature, population and ranking). The settlement that later became the city of Louisville was founded in 1778 by George Rogers Clark and is named in honor of King Louis XVI of France. The most famous of Louisville comes from "The most exciting two minutes in sports": the Kentucky Derby (Kentucky Derby), the horse race that is part of the Triple Crown of Thoroughbred Horses, which is held annually in this city, being a widely televised event. Louisville is located in north-central Kentucky on the border of Kentucky and Indiana located in the only natural obstacle of the Ohio River, the Falls of Ohio. Louisville is the head of Jefferson County since 2003, the city limits are contiguous to the county because of the merger between the county and city. Since it includes counties in Southern Indiana, Louisville metropolitan area is often referred to as Kentuckiana. Although it is located south of the United States, Louisville is influenced by the cultures of the Middle West and South, sometimes referred to as the northernmost Southern city or the southernmost Northern city in the United States. 1 2 In the census of 2000, Louisville had a population of 259,231. Although it was for the first time less than the union consolidated city-county of 260,512 Lexington. On November 7, 2000 Louisville and Jefferson County approved a referendum to merge into a consolidated government of city-county government named Louisville-Metropolitan County Jefferson (long form) and Louisville Metro (official short name), fusion was completed on January 1, 2003. This merger made Louisville out between the two largest city again.
