Liechtenstein, officially the Principality of Liechtenstein (/ lɪçtnʃta͡ɪn /), is a country in Central Europe, one of the smallest in the world, landlocked since it is surrounded by Switzerland to the west and east by Austria, countries also without maritime outlet. It is known as a tax haven. It is also the country's smallest German-speaking world. While not part of the European Union since December 2011 is part of the Schengen area of free movement. The Principality of Liechtenstein was current in antiquity a territory belonging to the Rhaetian province in the Roman Empire. For centuries, this territory, geographically removed from European strategic interests, contributed little to the history of the continent. Before the government of the current dynasty, the region was a stronghold of one of the main branches of the House of Habsburg. The ruling House of Liechtenstein currently has its origins in the distant Silesia. The Liechtenstein dynasty, from which the Principality takes its name, was among the most powerful noble families in Germany at the end of the Middle Ages. However, although govern large territories in Germany, these were granted feudal lords under the domain, mostly from the House of Habsburg. Therefore, without having fully mastered any imperial territory, the house of Liechtenstein did not meet the prerequisite for being a part of the Reichstag.
