Iowa is one of the 50 states of the United States of America, located in the Midwest Region of the country. 92% of the state's population are white, and the largest ethnic group in Iowa are the Germans, who comprise 35.7% of the state's population. Its main sources of income are manufacturing, agriculture and tourism. It is the largest producer of soybeans and ethanol in the U.S., and has the largest herd pigs in the country. The state's name comes from the Native American Iowa people inhabiting the region. The first Europeans to explore the region which is now the U.S. state of Iowa were the French Louis Jolliet and Jacques Marquette in 1673, and described the region as green and fertile. The first white settlers moved into the region in June 1833. On December 28, 1846, Iowa became the 29th state of the Union. When the first Native Americans arrived in what is now called Iowa for over 13,000 years, were hunter-gatherers living in a glacial landscape of the Pleistocene epoch. When European explorers arrived, Native Americans had become farmers with an economic infrastructure, social and political. This transformation is carried out gradually. During the Archaic period (makes from 10,500 to 2,800 years) Native Americans adapted to the environments and ecosystems becoming more sedentary as they increased the population. For over 3,000 years, during the late Archaic period, Native Americans in Iowa began growing domesticated plants. The next period, known as the "Woodland period" (forest) is characterized by a greater dependence on agriculture and a more complex social structure. Increased use of the mounds and pottery. During the late prehistoric period, which had its beginnings around 900 AD. C., was increased corn cultivation. The social changes promoted stable settlements. The arrival of European diseases products and post-historical period by European explorers and other ethnic groups of Amerindians were disorders in the population, the economy and the structure social.1
