The horseshoe settlement arose from 1925 to 1933 in Berlin-Britz, designed by Bruno Taut and Martin Wagner. It is one of the first projects of social housing and part of the large settlement of Britz / Fritz-Reuter-city, the second part designed by the architect Paul Engelmann and Emil Meyer was catching. Since 2008 she has been a UNESCO World Heritage Site. After the First World War, the influx increased sharply to Berlin by the war and because of the general unemployment: the loss of territory and the largely disbanded army led to refugee flows and additional living space. So many homes were severely overcrowded, though, for example, a studio was crowded with people as a kitchen until five. In the early 1920s were missing more than 100,000 homes in the city, could not meet the then almost exclusively private construction. From 1921 to 1928, therefore, numerous cooperatives, trying on a non-commercial basis with social reform and approaches to address the housing shortage. It should be cheaper here, and high-quality living space to be created, which also have good transport infrastructure. This was possible only through large-scale housing development. The horseshoe settlement is the first example of social housing and was a major challenge for architects and urban planners.
