Other user descriptions
Haiti, officially the Republic of Haiti (République d'Haïti French, Haitian Creole Repiblik d'Ayiti), is a country in the Antilles, located in the western part of the island of Spanish and bordered on the north by the Atlantic Ocean, south and west by the Caribbean Sea or the West Indies and east by the Dominican Republic. At the west is the Republic of Cuba. Its territory also includes the island of Gonave, Turtle Island, the archipelago of islands and island Cayemites Vaches and several other islands of its territorial waters. The uninhabited island of Navasse (in Spanish Navassa Island) is claimed by Haiti to the United States administration. The total area of Haiti extends 27,750 km ², housing a population of 10,033,000 inhabitants (2009) .4 Its capital and largest city is Port-au-Prince. Haiti is formed as semi-presidential republic under the Constitution adopted in 1987, but whose life was suspended several times since by political violence, particularly after two coups, both organized to overthrow the democratically elected president Jean-Bertrand Aristide , first coup in 1991, after the 2004 coup that forced intervention by United Nations Mission Task Stabilization Mission in Haiti (MINUSTAH). After an election supervised by the international community in 2006 was elected Chief of René Préval. Haiti's economy in 2009 generated a nominal GDP of 6.908 million dollars and a per capita income of $ 772, 5 being the poorest in the Americas and one of the world's most disadvantaged. According to The World Factbook, 80% of its population live below the poverty line and two thirds of it is dependent on one sector of agriculture and fishing, 6 traditionally organized into small subsistence farms, weakened by the lack and poor soil available, and foreign aid. Overexploitation and soil erosion are the result of intensive and uncontrolled deforestation that has taken the wooded area of Haiti from 60% in 1923 to less than 2% in 2006.7 The devastating tropical storms that occurred during 2008, affecting poor infrastructure of communications, the image of the industrial and service sectors suffer from lack of sustained investment because of the instability and violence. The largest industrial sector is textiles, accounting for more than 75% of export volume and 90% of GDP but is heavily dependent on external demand and tariff support, particularly from the United States.6 Haiti is included in the program of the International Monetary Fund and World Bank for developing countries highly indebted (Highly-Indebted Poor Country, HIPC) .8
