Located in the "way of the kings" in the Indian city Rajpath in New Delhi, India Gate (originally called the Memorial of all the Indian Wars) is a monument built by the architect Edwin Lutyens to commemorate the Indian soldiers who died in the First World War and the Afghan Wars of 1919. The original stone was laid on February 10, 1921 by the Duke of Connaught. The names of the soldiers who died in these wars are inscribed on the walls of the monument. Its construction was completed in 1931. Since 1971 is under an eternal flame monument, known as the Amar Jawan Jyoti (the flame of the immortal warrior), which marks the "Tomb of the Unknown Soldier" is dedicated to honor the unknown soldiers killed in clashes between India and Pakistan that took place that year. The construction of the Gateway of India, clearly colonial style, began in 1921 and ended in 1931. Initially under the monument stood the statue of King George V; statue disappeared on reaching India its independence. At the top of the monument reads as follows: The dead of the armies of India who fell with honor in France and Flanders Mesopotamia and Persia East Africa Gallipoli and elsewhere in the near or far east and also in the sacred memory of those who left their names inscribed fall in India or on the northwestern border during the Third Afghan War. The temple is a black marble cenotaph with a rifle in his barrel, crowned by a soldier's helmet. each face of the cenotaph has inscribed in gold the words "Amar Jawan" (Immortal Warrior). This cenotaph is a building that has on its four corners, four llamas that are kept constantly alive. The monument has a total height of 42 meters and is situated at the confluence of several major streets. The traffic around the Arc de Triomphe is often a source of conflict due to continuous traffic cuts caused by the risk of terrorist attacks. The area in which lies the India Gate, surrounded by grassy areas, usually one of the favorite destinations of Delhi families during holidays.
