Fiji were known as the "cannibal islands", as it was believed that his people were fierce and hostile. Unfortunately, the recent political history of coups has not helped many travelers to change their minds. Nevertheless, Fiji is a beautiful place that has a pleasant tropical climate. They can enjoy playing a variety of activities such as diving and snorkeling; also have excellent tourist facilities, both for budget travelers and for those seeking a more luxurious vacation. The history of the islands is unique in the spectrum of the Pacific, which has resulted in the melting pot of influences present Melanesian, Polynesian, Micronesian, Indian, Chinese and European. For nearly fifty years until the military coup of 1987, the indigenous people of Fiji represented only a minority in their own land. During the nineteenth century, the islands became the commercial center of the South Pacific and, in 1874, were claimed by the British as a colony. During the hundred years that about Fiji remained under British colonial government control, some ten thousand Indian workers were hired to work on sugar plantations. Nevertheless, indigenous Fijians managed to maintain their rituals and practices, as mekes (narrative dances), the constructions of bure (house), kava ceremonies and weaving and ceramic lid.
