Herodotus, the ancient Greek historian, described Egypt as 'the gift of the Nile', reflecting the admiration felt already in antiquity by the image of the pyramids, the Sphinx, Thebes and the river itself. Pharaohs, Greeks, Romans, Arabs, Turks and British ruled the African country and as a result, Egypt today is an amalgam of these legacies, along with the influence of Islam and the advances of the twentieth century. Villages built of adobe ruins stand beside Pharaonic surrounded by buildings of steel, stone and glass. The Bedouins live in tents made of goat skin, while farmers work the land with the primary tools that they used their ancestors. In the city long robes mingle with brands imported from the West, traffic competes with donkey-drawn carts and goats move freely. Nowhere is this colorful and gives these contrasts as in Cairo, a stunning city, crowded, where the relentless sound of car horns, the noise of the neighborhoods and the muezzin calling to prayer. However, all is chaos and noise in Cairo. Egypt is also the place you dream of any diver, is also the image of a peaceful caravan of camels across the desert or a peaceful stroll down the Nile.
