It is possible, for example, by boat through the mangroves in search of the intriguing manatees, whales observe the infatuation in the Bay of Samana and when they have seen plenty of natural wonders, back to civilization and prepare for the party. The people of the first European city in America, Santo Domingo, the very day does not pass admiring the colonial architecture of its houses: this city not only has a single carnival, but two, both filled with parades, elaborate floats, music and dancing in the streets. The Dominican Republic is a country that occupies just over the eastern two thirds of the Spanish in the Greater Antilles archipelago. The western third of the island is occupied by Haiti, therefore, the Spanish is an island that is shared by two states. Both of area and population, the Dominican Republic is the second largest country in the Caribbean (after Cuba), its land area is 48,442 square kilometers and is estimated to be approximately 10 million inhabitants.4 limits the north with the ocean Atlantic, south to the Caribbean or Caribbean Sea, east by the Mona Passage, which separates it from Puerto Rico, and west by the Republic of Haiti. Inhabited by Taínos since the seventh century, the territory of the country was discovered by Christopher Columbus in 1492 instead of becoming the first European settlement in America, named as Santo Domingo, the capital of the country and first capital of Spain in the New World. In Santo Domingo are the first cathedral and the first Latin American university and the first castle of America, located in the Colonial City, an area declared a World Heritage Site by UNESCO. After three centuries of Spanish, French and Haitian interludes, the country achieved independence in 1821 the first but was quickly taken by Haiti in 1822. After the victory in the Dominican War of Independence in 1844, Dominicans experienced several fights, mostly internal, as well as a brief return to Spanish rule (1861-1865). The U.S. occupation from 1916 to 1924, and then six years in calm and prosperity of Philip Horacio Vásquez Lajara (1924-1930), were followed by the dictatorship of Rafael Leonidas Trujillo Molina to 1961. The civil war of 1965 ended with a US-led intervention, and was followed by several periods of government of Joaquin Balaguer (1966-1978). Since then, the Dominican Republic has moved toward representative democracy.
