Other user descriptions
Clonmacnoise is an early Christian monastic abbey on the banks of the River Shannon in County Offaly, Ireland. His name is Cluain Mhic Irish Gaelic Nóis ("Meadow of the Sons of Nós"). The nearest large town is Athlone, 14 miles north. The site is bordered by three provinces (Connacht, Munster and Leinster) and is in the Eiscir Riada, an esker (sand hills system stratified gravel of glacial origin) passing through the swamps of central Ireland. Clonmacnoise was founded by St. Ciaran in 545 d. C. The saint had a vision for years and reached the right place for the future site of the abbey. Finally, along with eight companions, he found the place and also Diarmait (or Diarmuid) Mac Cerbaill, who helped build the first building, a small wooden church. Diarmait in 565 became the first Christian High King of Ireland, and the last to follow the pagan ritual of enthronement on the hill of Tara. St. Ciarán died a year after suffering from yellow fever and without having seen his work was completed. The Temple is a Romanesque church Finghín twelfth century Irish round tower with a 17 m high, according to the Chronicum Scotorum (written chronicle of events in Ireland from its earliest times to 1135), was completed in 1124 by Turlough O O'Connor, King of Connacht, and Gilla Christ Ua Maoileoin, abbot of Clonmacnoise. In 1135 lightning knocked the top of the tower, which was later rebuilt. It is believed that the masonry demolished by the storm was later used in building the Temple Finghín.
