Cape Town is the second most populous city in South Africa after Johannesburg. It is part of the metropolitan municipality of Cape Town. It is the capital of the Western Cape and the legislative capital of South Africa, which houses both the National Parliament and many other government offices. Cape Town is famous for its harbor and its natural conjunction of flora, Table Mountain and Cape Point. Often considered one of the most beautiful cities in the world by its geography, Cape Town is the most popular tourist destination in the country. Originally developed as a supply station for Dutch ships traveling to East Africa, India and Asia, over two hundred years before the opening of the Suez Canal in 1869. The arrival of the Dutch sailor Jan van Riebeeck on April 6, 1652 marked the establishment of the first European settlement in sub-Saharan Africa. Rapidly outgrew its original purpose as the first outpost at the Castle of Good Hope. It was the largest city in South Africa until the growth of Johannesburg and Durban. National Census of 2001, the city then had a population of 2,900,000 inhabitants. Its area of 2,499 square kilometers makes it one of the largest cities in the country with comparatively low population density of 1,158 inhabitants per square kilometer.

With its high population it is one of the more powerful cities in South Africa and brings in a lot of immigrants to the country leading to it being one of the most multicultural cities in the world. Originally a supply station for Dutch Ships sailing to East Africa in the 1600�s it was the first settlement by the Europeans. Its growing population though quickly made it more than just a port turning into the thriving city it is today.
