Formerly called Upper Volta, the country was renamed the August 4, 1984 by President Thomas Sankara in Burkina Faso. Its name means "the land of upright people" in the local language Mooré (burkina means full) and the other dyula local language (translated as homeland faso). Burkina Faso became independent from France on August 5, 1960. Governmental instability during the 1970 and 1980 was followed by multiparty elections in the early 1990's.
