The Royal Library of Alexandria or Ancient Library of Alexandria, was in its time the largest in the world. Located in the Greek city of Alexandria, is estimated to have been founded in the early third century. C. by Ptolemy I Soter, and enlarged by his son Ptolemy II Philadelphus, leading to accommodate up to 900,000 manuscripts. A new Bibliotheca Alexandrina, recalling the original and promoted by UNESCO, was inaugurated on 16 October 20021 in the same city. The destruction of the Library of Alexandria is one of the contentious issues of Western civilization, the allocation to the Romans, Egyptians, Christians or Muslims, depending on the source consulted. When the Caliph Omar referred to the library of Alexandria, stated: "If it contains only what is in the Koran, is useless and should be burned, if something else is, is bad, and it must burn." 2 It is no precise evidence its most essential, and have not found the ruins of the Museum of the Serapeum still very scarce. For some Latin writers, the Great Library was founded by the Ptolemies was hardly affected in the fire caused by the troops of Julius Caesar in 48 BC. C. Probably had disappeared at the time of Arab domination, though some writers say that the Caliph Umar ibn al-Khattab ordered the destruction of thousands of manuscripts. Whatever the faults of Christians and Muslims, so the library should be at some unspecified time in the third century or IV, perhaps in 273, when Emperor Aurelian took and sacked the city, or when Diocletian did the same in 297. The library-daughter of the Serapeum, the successor to the Great Library, was sacked, or at least emptied, in 391, when Emperor Theodosius the Great ordered the destruction of pagan temples of the city of the Ptolemies. Since the nineteenth century, scholars have tried to understand the organization and structure of the library, and has been debated long and hard about its end. Knowledge of the library, how it was, they worked their wise men, the exact number of volumes and even the same situation, are all very scarce, since very little evidence there is to it, and even these are sporadic and scattered. Researchers and historians of the twentieth and twenty-first insisted that it has formed a retrospective utopia about the Library of Alexandria. There is no doubt that the library existed, but few certainties in writing about it. There have been hundreds of contradictory statements, questionable or simply false, making assumptions based on very little data, most of the time, are only approximations.
