Berlin is the capital city of the Federal Republic of Germany. It is located in northeastern Germany, just 70 km from the border with Poland. It is crossed by the rivers Spree, Havel and Wuhle Panke. With a population of 3.4 million inhabitants, Berlin is the most populous city and conurbation fifth among the countries of the Union. Founded in 1237 Berlin was successively the capital of the Kingdom of Prussia (1701-1918), the German Empire (1871-1918), of the Weimar Republic (1919-1933) and the Third Reich (1933-1945). After the Second World War the city was divided, the eastern part of the city became the capital of East Germany, while the region west of the city became an enclave of the Federal Republic of Germany in East Germany . Berlin is a world city and a cultural center class. It is one of the most influential in the political arena of the European Union.
