Amritsar (Punjabi: ਅੰਮ੍ਰਿਤਸਰ, Hindi: अमृतसर, ambarsar) is a city in northern India and administrative headquarters of Amritsar district of Punjab state Langar. Her name means The Pool of Nectar of Inmortalidad.1 2001 Indian census reported a population of 1,500,000. The district's total population is 3,695,077. Amritsar is located 217 km (135 mi) northwest of state capital Chandigarh and 32 km (29 mi) east of Lahore, Pakistan, both very close to the India-Pakistan border. It is home to the Harmandir Sahib, also known as Golden Temple, cultural and spiritual epicenter of the Sikh religion. This shrine attracts more visitors than even the Taj Mahal in Agra, over 100,000 people visit on weekdays only, and is the main destination of Indians residentes.2 Amritsar is also known for the slaughter of amritsar or slaughter of Jallianwala Bagh in 1919 under British rule, and operation Blue Star, during the term of the Indian Prime Minister Indira Gandhi. Its main economic activities include tourism, textiles and carpets production, farm produce, handicrafts, trade and light engineering. The city is also home to Central Khalsa Orphanage, a place that was home to Shaheed Udham Singh a leading activist for the independence of India. Amritsar was founded by Guru Ram Das Sarovar under the name, over a territory which it bought for 700 rupees to the owners of the village of Tung, its location was privileged as being a point of passage for those who plied the Silk Road. At first Guru Ram Das began building the Santokhsar Sarovar, near the town of Sultanwind in 1564, could not complete work until 1588. In 1574 Guru Ram Das built his residence and moved to her place now known how Chakk Ram Das.
